So you’ve heard them all, ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’, 'How do you eat an elephant?' 'One bite at a time', and the good old song, ‘from little things, big things grow…’ And guess what? They’re all true! Not sure about the elephant one but you get the gist.
Edison didn’t wake up one morning, decide to invent a practical lightbulb, rollover and go back to sleep, put it off for three months and then one afternoon make it happen. It took him a full year and a half of trial and error to make his idea work!
Have you ever felt totally overwhelmed by a big goal or dream? I know I have! One of mine was to run 10km when my last long run was 3km back in year 12, another was to make this site happen while also balancing a fulltime job and active social and family life. If there is something you want to do, be, have, see…start small, work out the steps you need to take and then take one small step at a time. Break your big goal down so it doesn’t seem so scary and once you’ve determined the first step, get started! Set yourself up for success. Often the hardest part of getting started is actually starting. Sounds silly I know but we often put off that first phone call or first action. Take the first step…it will help build momentum and before you know it you’ll be well on your way. For my run I started small with interval training and then built up my kilometres each week, and with this site I wrote myself a plan and then did a little bit each day.
Big goals take time, commitment and accountability…yuck! Sound scary? Just start and see where you end up. Do you have a big goal that you want to break down and get started on? See this months time management article on how to break big goals down. Plus, for some inspiration, read about July's Big Achiever, Renee, who turned her love affair with Nepal into a great cause.
